Wild Kingdom

Project Overview

“Wild Kingdom” has a lot of nostalgia with people who watched it with their families growing up. It became one of the most respected wildlife programs. With over 600 videos unused on our site, we were tasked with creating a brand new site that was exciting and kept users coming back.

My Contributions

From conception to completion, I was part of this project. This included participating in a design sprint, developing storyboards, wireframing, prototyping, and visual design, as well as pitching and presenting design solutions to stakeholders and clients.

Design Sprint

We kicked off this project with a design sprint. It was remote since it was during covid but we were still able to follow the design sprint model to brainstorm and create wireframes together. Some goals we discussed were how to best leverage new and existing content, create a site that was easy to update and best utilize email capture.

Home Page

Participants in user testing mentioned that they preferred more modern imagery. Therefore, it was important to balance older and newer images. We wanted to create nostalgia with the older audience but also engage a new audience as well. On the home page we decided to spotlight an animal and updated it periodically. This creates a reason for users to come back and content to use for our email campaign. The animal spotlight includes a poll, animal facts, playlist and ask our previous host a question. During user testing we also found out that people couldn’t easily find a way to subscribe. This was one of our main goals, so we added this to the navigation.

Explore Videos Page

One of the main goals was to create a way to use our existing videos. We created a simple way for people to explore videos. Users can choose a category, search, explore the featured episode, or choose a video from the playlists. We chose the categories through a card sort test. Once the user chooses a video they can watch it on our site which encourages them to continue to engage with more content.

Timeline page

Participants in user testing felt that this page helps communicate the idea that “Wild Kingdom” has been around for a long time but that it is still relevant. This page helped all audiences build an awareness of all the things “Wild Kingdom” has done over the years.

Kidzone

We created the Kidzone page to help grandparents and parents engage their kids with “Wild Kingdom”. We wanted to help create the feeling of togetherness that the show created for them growing up. We included short videos, and PDF downloads for crafts and games. We also included some facts to encourage kids to feel empowered to help the planet.
